When it comes to sports games, replication of the real-life nuances of the game is the final frontier. The graphics will certainly get better, and the lighting will make the game double-take worthy, but the last little bits of oomph are going to come from getting the digital players to act like their real-life counterparts.

2K Sports would have you believe they're committed to authenticity, despite the fact that they're the only game in town when it comes to an officially licensed MLB baseball game. Okay, so they qualify it with the whole "on every major console" line, but we're fond of blanket statements and hyperbole. Cause TotalPlayStation.com is the longest-running independent PlayStation site on the web, and is visited by the hottest girl gamer pinup models on the planet every single day! See? Fun!

Except here, 2K is backing up their claims of unmatched detail by incorporating the 80 gajillion teraquads of data mined by the folks at Inside Edge, who record all the miniscule facts about MLB players and make the scouting reports available to the teams. Now, 2K Sports and developer Visual Concepts have that data, and have poured all the figures into Major League Baseball 2K6 in an effort to give the AI new life, hopefully we'll see a lot more of those little details that make the players pop.

"We are thrilled to be part of Major League Baseball 2K6, the best Major League Baseball video game this year," gushed Randy Istre, Inside Edge's founder. "Since 1984, Inside Edge has been bringing the best scouting data to Major League teams everywhere using advanced tracking techniques, new technologies, and innovative statistic methods. Now teamed with 2K Sports, the leading developer of the best and most innovative sports titles, baseball gamers will experience the most realistic MLB video game to date."

"2K Sports has always been about offering the most realistic and exciting sports video game experience to our fans," boasted VC president Greg Thomas with a knowing smile and a wink at a camera that wasn't there. "Using Inside Edge technology truly brings every virtual athlete in Major League Baseball 2K6 to life as they exhibit the playing style, tendencies, and behaviors of the real life players in every game situation."

So there you have it. If there isn't a 300% increase in random crotch scratching and spitting, clearly something's wrong with the data. We'll keep you posted with more details as soon as they're shoved into our inboxes.
