We've seen this kind of transition before from Naughty Dog. After three solid entrees into its Crash Bandicoot series in the hayday of the original PlayStation, the boys and girls tried their hands at cart racing with the series' cast, and thankfully, to much success. With Jax X: Combat Racing, shipping today, we'll hopefully see the same results, as fan favorites (and even the not-so-favorable characters) are ready and roaring for vehicular combat within the Jak and Daxter universe.

"While completing Jak 3, we realized we wanted to expand on vehicular gameplay in our next game, so we created vehicles that were fully customizable with paint jobs, body parts and accessories," confesses Evan Wells, co-president, Naughty Dog, Inc. "We wanted to provide gamers unique-looking vehicles to choose from when racing, and the degree of personalization available in Jak X: Combat Racing is one of the elements that has made it the most fun. Showing off your custom designed car online to your friends and competitors adds a fun element of personality and bragging to the game."

The bulk of Jax X is in its 80 event-heavy single-player Adventure Mode, rich with challenge-worthy play modes from the standard first-to-the-finish-line racing of Circuit Race to the more Twisted Metal-style play with Death Race. As we'll soon drop a quote from a SCEA producer touting about this, up to six players can get their game on over the Net in the game's Exhibition Mode.

"We are very excited to take the Jak and Daxter franchise online for the first time," shines Grady Hunt, senior producer, product development, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Naughty Dog has made significant strides in delivering an intense and competitive racing experience to the largest console online gaming community, and gamers will feel exhilarated as they experience vehicular combat racing for the first time in the series, while still feeling like they are in familiar territory as they explore the Jak and Daxter universe."

On a related note, new characters from the Daxter PSP game, due out in spring are said to be unlockable drivers in Jak X, as well as a special vehicle just for our furry sidekick.

Jak X: Combat Racing has likely pulled into stores as we speak. Get the first-hand deets from our preview for now and be on the lookout for a full review in the coming days, as well as addition info concerning Daxter.
