"For the next installment of the .hack series, we wanted to continue to explore the boundaries of perceived reality while making the game more accessible to new players," said Naruo Uchida, Vice President of Localization at NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. ".hack//G.U. Vol.1: Rebirth takes place in a darker world, where players are continually faced with the challenges of ruthless Player Killings, and unexplainable mysterious events, but still maintains the humor and distinct personality of the original titles."

C'mon, how is the whole idea of messing with existential ideas like what reality really is not the perfect place for a video game world? It worked (sort of) for what Bandai tried to do with the anime/video game crossover that was the original .hack, but some tired of things after four whole games.

Well this time, it's different. This time, there are only three games.

But seriously, the whole reboot of "The World," the faux-MMORPG that the characters in .hack//GU Vol. 1: Rebirth goof around in has been retooled a little. A desktop-driven interface for in-game e-mails and surfing around, plus guilds and clans and other such fun little MMO truisms are all here, but they're offline. Even though they're online. Yes, it's confusing, but that's partly the idea.

For those willing to take a peek into the whole Matrix-esque "what is reality?" question, the game has shipped to stores as of right now and should be on all shelves tomorrow.
