Sam: I still remember thinking that I wouldn't see a game like GTA3 in this generation of games, and I was amazed to see the graphics actually got quite a bit better for Vice City. There's still some issues with the engine pumping too much into the PS2 and the ground or fences disappearing, for instance, but the models, the cars, the textures... It's all a marked improvement.

Kyle: Pedestrians and vehicles are still extremely solid and interact the way you'd expect them too. There is still a real glitching problem in the game, though. For example, if you (Tommy) are too close to the camera, it will go way off target and you're forced to run in circles in order to get it recentered. On the other hand, the fact that you are given several options for which camera to have the game set on takes care of a lot of potential problems.

Sam: Yeah, there's still a few glitches, but stuff like the insane draw distance, the amount of texture work, the lighting... It makes it easier to overlook some of the faults the game has. I'm actually pretty amazed the framerate is as good as it is, but there's an overall feeling that the game is just a bit rushed.

Kyle: Definitely. The engine always manages to keep up with the game's fast-paced action. The 80's Miami look is outstanding. Vice City has a nice scenic view during the day, and at night the gorgeous neon lights fill the city. Textures have really improved this time around. And yes, Rockstar North has finally dealt with that glitchy ocean from GTA3 and turned it into beautiful, life-like water!

Sam: Mmmm... The water is GREAT. I was floored the first time I saw it; just a nice, undulating, semi-transparent surface instead of a murky, lifeless texture. All told, I'd say they managed to kick up the graphics a few notches over GTA3. They get a 9.5 from me.

Kyle: Amazing scenic texture and pedestrian and vehicle detail. The outstanding lighting effects bring Vice City to life, not to mention the realistic amount of stores and buildings contained in the game. Indoor environments are still pretty basic this early on, but they add a lot more interaction to the city. The only drawback I found was the occasional glitching. A solid 9.5 from me as well.

Average: 9.5
