Gaming Without Wires

We've taken our PS2s into the wireless age, and it's easier than you think. Get the scoop on all the equipment, get to know the standards, and walk away with the kind of knowledge that will make your local CompUSA salesman shudder at your passing.

Which brings us to the final little bit on going wireless. Now that you know what's up with your broadband connection, know a little about 802.11 wireless networks and their pros and cons (and what those little letters mean), it's time to make the final purchase for all your wireless gaming: the wireless bridge. A wireless bridge converts a standard wired device (like that PS2 o' yours) into a wireless device, essentially allowing you to take your PS2 anywhere the wireless signal will reach. This is incredibly handy when your broadband modem is, say, downstairs and your PS2 is upstairs a few rooms away.

Again, we shacked up with D-Link when it came to getting this up, opting for their DWL-G810, which converts any wired signal into a wireless broadcast that can be picked up by that handly little wireless router you snagged. With just a simple Ethernet cable running from the PS2's Network Adaptor to the back of the bridge, and a quick pop into the settings to make sure everything was kosher (pop into our forums for a little Online Help and we'll getcha through the whole process).

From there it's just a matter of firing up your favorite game and getting to work, or, if you haven't run it yet, the network setup in either any online-enabled game or straight from your Network Adaptor Setup Disc. Just choose the default wired connections (your PS2 doesn't know it had gone wireless), and don't worry about plugging in a username or password during your internet connection; your broadband modem and the router will take care of that for you. Once you've stepped through the basic options, test the connection and then get your game on.

While we aren't on too often, feel free to poke around with your favorite online game. Most of us have some kind of PSX2.com name or go by our usual staff names, and we do like to pop on from time to time to show we're a bit better than your average gamer, and welcome any challenges from our readers. Good luck and welcome to the wireless age!
