"Inspired by firsthand experiences with the supernatural, Fatal Frame's trademark Camera Obscura defense puts the player face to face with horrifying ghosts," offered Andrea Frechette, marketing manager at Tecmo. "When not battling ghosts head-on, Fatal Frame III's subtle audio and unearthly visuals will give players the unsettling feeling that the ghosts in the game are not the only ones surrounding them."

It's not often that an entire office bands together in a single, unified moment of collective finger pointing and laughing, but Tecmo's Fatal Frame games do it, as I stumble white-faced and wet-pantsed from our game room, scared out of my gourd into the rest of the staff giggling like little girls.

Since only one of them is a girl, that's a super-harsh comeback for all my high-pitched screams while playing the games. Now, the process will begin anew, as FFIII has finally hit stores. This is the part you start getting creeped out for no reason. If you've played the games, this is likely because you're remembering all the freaky-deaky bits of the game, and they're all coming back to you.

If you haven't, well, maybe it's just the anticipation of finding out about the storyline, which involves Japanese hottie Rei Kurosawa being hunted by nightmares and guilt after a car crash that killed her fiancé, eventually driving her to seek refuge at the House of Sleep. With a name that vaguely indicates eternal rest (or, uh, unrest) and the reappearance of the Camera Obscura, the creepiest weapon ever devised (you have to look through it and stare down approaching specters to use it), there's a good chance something ghostly is going to be happening.

While Rei does have friends this time around (Kei Amakura and Miku Hinasaki, both of which are playable), there is still the issue of an otherworldly tattoo that's slowly overtaking her body, so the mystery of both the afterlife denizens of the House of Sleep and Rei's own personal infection both play out in the game. And we will play it, oh yes, yes we will.
