2K Picks J.J. All the Way

Ex-Duke sharpshooter J.J. Redick is College Hoops 2K7's cover star.

We've done a lot of these cover athlete updates. Every year, with dozens of sports games getting released, it's an inevitability, but rarely are we so impressed with an athlete's performance that we actually feel like the cover nod is completely warranted. Maybe that's just because former Duke Blue Devils star J.J. Redick has managed to notch an awful lot of accomplishments during his NCAA career -- including having his face plastered across every copy of College Hoops 2K7.

Though he's now bound for the Orlando Magic (and thus eligible for a cover deal, since active NCAA players can't do endorsements), the sheer number of accolades and records set by the guy are too impressive not to list: he snagged the Adolph F. Rupp Award twice, the John R. Wooden Award, the James Sullivan Award, the Naismith College Player of the Year Award, was an All-American in both his Junior and Senior year, locked in Duke's free-throw percentage record at an amazing .922, and set, among other Duke records, a clinched career 2769 points. Clearly, he can shoot.

"It's an honor to be on the cover of College Hoops 2K7," Redick gushed. "I'm a huge video gamer and have always been a fan of the College Hoops 2K series for its authenticity and addictive gameplay. I'm very excited to be a part of 2K7 and from what I've seen so far, this game is going to be mind-blowing."

"We are thrilled to have J.J. as our cover athlete for College Hoops 2K7," added Erik Whiteford, VP of 2K Sports. "He embodies exceptional talent, drive and spirit -- all of the characteristics of a collegiate basketball competitor and winner. J.J. is working very closely with us and our development team, contributing his knowledge and passion for basketball to further ensure the most realistic and exciting college basketball experience."

As in most sport game years, plenty has been tweaked and added to the franchise. A tighter overall approach to the presentation should help give the game the broadcast feel, but the on-court action has been ramped up too; better defensive AI, better controls while managing defense, more of that college atmosphere and even a post-season National Invitation Tournament. Oh, and it just so happens to be appearing on that fancy new system Sony has coming out in November. More as it comes in.
