It's almost mind-blowing, to step back and observe just how the Internet has utterly simplified the transfer and promotion of music these past couple of years. CD sales stutter as downloadable music has become the overwhelmingly popular choice of listening, while community monoliths like MySpace have enabled just about every aspiring garage band out there just get their music online with a simple point and a click.

Electronic Arts knows it, well enough that they have teamed up with MySpace, Virgin Records and Epiphone in an effort to get you, the hopeful musician, into a Burnout game. Through the Burnout Bandslam, unsigned bands across the U.S and Europe are given the opportunity the show off their finest stuff to the global MySpace audience, currently 80 million strong. That crowd will then vote for their favorite songs, and in the end, two winning bands (one from each country) will walk away with a Virgin Records demo recording contract and a chance to have their song showcased in a "future Burnout videogame" (presumably Burnout 5), while a runner-up each territory (12 in all) will each take home a prestigious Epiphone Les Paul Custom Guitar.

Evidently everyone has some kind words to say about the contest.

"Many of the biggest bands around the world have been first discovered through EA videogames, and now we are expanding the opportunity to unsigned bands through this year's Burnout Bandslam," grins Steve Schnur, worldwide executive of music and marketing for EA. "The Burnout videogame series is all about attitude and rebellion. So I look forward to discovering a band or two which fits that definition."

"EA has consistently broadened the lanes where music and interactive gaming intersect, and has proven that video games are a rich platform for the discovery and enjoyment of new and established artists, so a collaboration between Virgin and EA has great logic," notes Jeff Kempler, COO, Capitol Music Group. "Partnering with EA in this exciting artist discovery and development contest is a perfect fit for Virgin's dedication to innovative and expansive interaction with creative talent and music fans wherever they may be."

The Bandslam kicked off the February 6th, but so long as you have a MySpace Music page and, well, songs, you've got until March 14th to get your entry in. Head on over to www.myspace.com/burnoutbandslam and let your music be hearrrrrrd!
