Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today that North American sales of the PlayStation 2 have reached 25 million units, and worldwide have soared to more than 70 million units. According to SCEA, 2.6 million of those PS2 owners (or 10%) have taken their game online.

"PlayStation 2 continues to lead an incredibly successful life filled with significant milestones that provide a clear course for others to follow," said Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. "With more than a quarter of a billion gamers and 2.6 million connected consoles, we have yet again surpassed all expectations. While our competitors strive to meet the new standards we've laid before them, our focus remains fixed on driving the momentum of our platform and the industry forward."

Not surprisingly, sales of the PlayStation 2 Combo Pack, which includes a PS2 console, a Network Adapter and a copy of the online-capable ATV Offroad Fury 2, has boosted both sales of the console and encouraged gamers to join the world of online gaming. The upcoming March 23 release of the Hard Disk Drive (and Final Fantasy XI) should further expand the PlayStation 2 online community. We'll be sure to let you know just how the HDD helps sales once it hits stores later this month.
