You know, coming from a company that hardly carries a reputation for sports titles, the Winning Eleven has time and time again proved it can hang with, if not surpass, the big boys of the soccer genre. This year is no different, with Konami Digital Entertainment giving Winning Eleven 9 the boot today to stores nationwide. Most significantly, the console versions have finally gone online, will the series all makes an unprecedented handheld debut on the PSP.

“The release of Winning Eleven 9 is a true milestone for this hallowed soccer franchise, as the massive community of Winning Eleven enthusiasts can finally play head-to-head online either on the PlayStation 2 or on Xbox as well as enjoy ‘soccer on-the-go’ with the PSP system version of the game,” poured Catherine Fowler, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “With all of its new features, in-depth gameplay and lifelike realism, Winning Eleven proves once again that it is the best playing and most authentic soccer video game in the industry.”

Online play, complete with nationwide tournaments and a divisional ranking system, is only one out of the game’s laundry list of features, which include the Master League dynasty mode, new league teams, all-new formations such as “Wing Back” and “Second Striker,” photo-realistic graphics and… well, you get the point. And for good measure, the Memorial Match allows you to save the results from “Vs.” matches against a human pal (as opposed to AI, we mean… not to insult your robot friend or anything), collecting match records and winning points for up to 20 people.

Did we hear a whistle? Yep, it looks like Winning Eleven 9 has officially kicked off in stores with a $39.99 price tag to its name. Footie fans, you know what to do.
