[Pre-E3 2006] SEGA's Next Mega-Franchise: Pool?

Okay, so mega may be the wrong word. But hey, PSP and PS2 versions!

"Pool is a classic game that a wide variety of audiences can identify with," ventures Scott A. Steinberg, SEGA of America's Vice President of Marketing. "With a host of exciting new modes and features, both World Pool Championship 2007 and World Pool Challenge 2007 will provide new avenues for virtual hustlers to rack ‘em up."

Yeah, you read right, pool. And two versions of it, too. Now granted, pool may be a genre that hasn't really be explored since the early days of the 128-bit era (are we even counting bits anymore?), one of those niches of games that, like surfing, just sort of died off, but SEGA will have none of that! They've employed British developer Blade Interactive (yes, the very same folks working on The Hustle, another pool game for Activision) to craft the games.

Both World Pool Championship on the PS2 and World Pool Challenge on the PSP offer the chance to play through officially licensed tournaments (10 of 'em in all, including the World Cup, U.S. Open and Mosconi Cup). The two versions seem identical, sporting a Golden Cue Mode that arranges eight- or nine-ball games, plus a handful of variants, and of course the fun of the World Trickshot Championship, which really sort of explains itself.

We've got the first shots of the game in action, so feel free to take a peek while we root around for a little more info -- particularly how the game will play on the notoriously finicky PSP analog nub. We'll make sure you know more as soon as we do.
