Crave Working with a Full Deck

Because everyone needs card games on the go.

Crave Entertainment's move to value-priced software and handhelds a few years back seems to be doing them some good. Though we're certainly in the minority here, we actually like that a company has the wherewithal to know when to concentrate on a particular market (and hey, Tokyo Xtreme Racer DRIFT was pretty damn fun, screw the haters). For the most part, that's meant games that appeal to the more casual market, and the latest PS2/PSP offering, World Championship Cards, is a prime example.

If that whole World Championship moniker sounds familiar, you're probably used to hearing Howard Lederer's name attached to it. That's not a fluke; Crave is capitalizing on what brand recognition the series has managed to garner thus far as Shari Snow, Crave's Director of Marketing explains.

"With the phenomenal success of the World Championship Poker titles, the World Championship brand has become recognized for high quality," she intoned. "Players will know they can expect the same standard gameplay and features in this collection that they find in the poker titles."

Except this isn't poker. It's Hearts, Cribbage, Gin Rummy, Bridge, Crazy 8s and another 25+ old-timey card games that are decidedly un-poker. It's the anti-poker if you will -- the balance to all those quickly rushed poker cash-ins. Not that we're commenting on the quality of WCC, mind you, but hey, at least it's not another poker game. It's also dirt cheap, going for just $20 a pop on PSP (which offers eight-player Ad Hoc Wi-Fi) and just $15 on PS2 (which offers headset and EyeToy support in addition to online play).

We're not sure when games will hit, but since there's doubtlessly millions of you reading the site right now and wondering, we'll make sure we update things as soon as we know.
