Redman’s True Crime: Exclusive Songs

Yep, the Funk Doc penned two just for Activision.

The Law of GTA decreeith: thou shalt not have a free-roaming crime drama without licensed music. And so it has been since 20 ought one that all games featuring a carjacking protagonist have also featured real music. Not that we have a problem with that, of course, but it does mean the person or persons tasked with actually picking the songs have a big job ahead of them.

Unless of course you’re Activision, and apparently just take the shotgun approach to things by signing 80+ artists to the True Crime: NYC soundtrack, all of them New York in theme, if not in digs. The mix is, admittedly, awesome, spanning rock, hip-hop, hardcore and punk songs from (get ready) Bob Dylan, Jay-Z, Fat Joe, The Ramones, My Chemical Romance, The Velvet Underground, A Tribe Called Quest and many, many more.

Among those hip-hop tracks will be three new ones from Redman – one from his upcoming album Red Gone Wild called “Rush The Security” and two more tracks created just for the game. Not surprisingly, Redman will take over for the previous game’s LA-based rapper unlockable, Snoop Dog, and appear in the game as a special character.

“As an East Coast artist who paid his dues performing in the clubs of New York City, Redman’s inspired rhymes bring the gritty realism of the city to life in our game,” flowed Tim Riley, worldwide executive of music at Activision. “His bold lyrics and hard-edged funk beats capture the vibes of the city from Washington Heights to Harlem and all the way down to Battery Park.”

Def Jam CEO and President Jay-Z seems to agree, offering, “This soundtrack is New York City.”

As verbose as ever, that one.
