American Wasteland Covered in Classic Punk

All the bands you love to hate are updating the songs you just plain love.

Few things polarize music fans as much as the almighty cover song. It's a risky thing to try to play a classic song note for note, much less add your own touches without it pissing off someone who first made out to the song or something. That of course doesn't stop the music industry from convincing bands that they should do it, and it doesn't stop the egos of the musicians from thinking they can do the songs justice, but... well, we went and got off on a tirade there, didn't we?

Digression aside, Activision and LA-based Vagrant Records have decided to use some of that extra cash they have laying around to do something incredibly cool (or stupid, depending on how much of a purist you are): they're letting 14 artists put their spin on 16 classic punk songs that will be featured exclusively on the soundtrack to Tony Hawk's American Wasteland.

"Tony Hawk games are known for having incredible soundtracks that match the look and feel of the game play," opined an apparently well-informed Tim Riley, worldwide executive of music at Activision. "Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland pays homage to the roots of skateboarding and the music on the CD does the same with the assembly of some of the best new bands of today giving us their take on punk classics."

"Putting this soundtrack together was like stepping into a time machine," added Vagrant CEO and co-owner Rich Egan. "The songs will take listeners back to a great era in music and skating and all the credit goes to the bands. They did a great job covering these classic songs. Fans are going to be stoked on the music and how it compliments the game."
