Lara Croft Goes Guinness

Say hello to the Guinness World Record’s “Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine.”

Ten years of transfixing gamers with her tomb-raiding prowess, countless cameos, stirring British tongue and downright steamy ass…ets, and it’s come to this. Lara Croft, perhaps known to some as the “British Billion Dollar Cyber-babe” (or simply “that dual pistol-touting hottie with the tight shorts”), has received a historic honor today from the Guinness Book of World Records, who named her the “Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine.”

The Tomb Raider’s accomplishments are enough to make a B-list actor weep, with over 28 million games sold worldwide. She’s appeared on-stage with U2, has been plastered on the cover of 200 magazines and had the Tomb Raider licensing industry skyrocket to over $1 billion after a pair of major motion pictures. Mmm, Angelina Jolie.

“It is a mark of the phenomenal success of the Tomb Raider series that 10 years after the first game release Lara Croft is more popular now than ever. It is fitting that she has been recognised for this remarkable achievement.” poured Ian Livingstone OBE, the man responsible for discovering Lara back in 1996. “The new game Tomb Raider; Legend utilises the very latest capabilities in high definition gaming and Lara looks more stunning than ever before.”

Oh, and about her game? It’s pretty freakin’ amazing, and you can read all about it in our full-blown review. Tomb Raider: Legend is out on Tuesday.

Yeah, we’d say Lara is back alright.
