Sam Fisher Plays for Both Teams
Splinter Cell 4 now has an official name. First screens too!
Published: December 14, 2005
It seems like just yesterday that we were geeking out on the news of a new Splinter Cell game. Technically, it was two-plus months ago, and it’s now fairly certain that – officially at least – the Xbox 360 is the only next-gen console that Sam Fisher will be sneaking around on come next Spring.
Fear not, though, there’s still plenty of hot hot stealth action to be had on the PlayStation 2. In fact, Ubisoft is still keeping their A Team in Montreal on the current-gen projects, and guaranteeing exclusive content for all the different platforms (it’s hitting all current-gen systems along with the 360 and PC), so all of that insane technical wizardry that made Chaos Theory a hit.
“Ubisoft is excited to have re-imagined the Splinter Cell franchise by introducing Sam Fisher as a double agent, expanding the depth of his character,” exclaimed Tony Kee, VP of Marketing at Ubisoft. “Gamers are going to find themselves immersed in entirely new territory that will allow Ubisoft to expand on its already captivating Splinter Cell franchise.”
Oh, yeah, that whole re-imagining thing. See, it’s not just a new title, Double Agent refers to Sam Fisher’s new role. If you’ve been paying attention to the official teaser site, you’ll know Fisher’s daughter Sarah was killed by a drunk driver. Though little about Sam Fisher the father has really been explored, it was probably the only non-business side of him allowed to show in the games, and it understandably had a massive impact on his ability to do his job.
Discharged from Third Echelon, he ends up taking a gig for the NSA as a double-agent – and that means he has to get in with the enemy. He’s sent to prison, busts an enemy agent out to gain his trust and... well, that’s for all of us to find out. All if this info, plus a handful of screenshots and more details are revealed in this month’s Game Informer.
“The surprising new direction for the series will certainly excite fans and attract the attention of a whole new group of gamers,” commented Jeremy Zoss, associate editor at Game Informer Magazine. “As fans of the Splinter Cell series, Game Informer is thrilled to bring our readers a world exclusive first look at Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent.”
Why there’s an official press release statement from a member of the press is a little puzzling, since we’re all supposed to leave the clichéd pull quotes to the PR peeps writing them or the company talking heads gushing about them, but hey, we are just a piddly little fan site. It’s probably just jealousy talking.
At least we can let the screenshots do all the talking here, along with a sexy little teaser trailer on the Splinter Cell Double Agent game page. Head over there and see for yourself.
