Lockdown Locked In

Hooray, new Rainbow Six today!

Ubisoft is on a roll these days, with entries into some very major franchises that all seem to offer a ton of potential beyond what they had available a few years back. But the house that Tom Clancy built hasn’t forgotten their bread and butter, and while everyone may immediately associate ol’ Tom with Splinter Cell, there’s a certain shooter that doesn’t do too badly either.

The Rainbow Six games went from an ultra-realistic PC-only first-person shooter to something far more squad-based and console-centered. The result, of course, is one of the better tactical shooters out there, and it’s meant plenty of money for Ubisoft. Not content to let that slip by, they’ve kept adding to the franchise, and the latest entry is Lockdown.

"Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is the godfather of tactical squad-based play, having invented the genre in 1998," gasped Tony Kee, Ubisoft’s VP of Marketing before taking a deep breath. "It has become a premier brand in our industry and is especially respected for its outstanding online gameplay. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six brand on Xbox has the record for most consecutive months as the number one most played game on Xbox Live, having stayed at the top slot for 12 consecutive months. With Lockdown, we intend to keep that excellence alive and well. With the PS2 version made by Red Storm Entertainment, and the Xbox version made by Ubisoft Montreal, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Lockdown has been created by two of the greatest studios in the world."

That’s a meaty quote, sure, but it seems like an equally meaty game, what with exclusive online modes for both the PS2 and Xbox versions (they’d be Rivalry Mode and Persistent Elite Creation – an advanced character creation option – respectively), and a darker storyline split between mainstay badass Ding Chavez and newcomer sniper Dieter Weber.

Given pedigree of the Red Storm development studio, we have high hopes for the latest installment, and we’ll be sure to let you know how things turn out in a few days. For now, check out the insane number of screens (okay, 14) and awesome video (in two sizes and Win/Mac flavors!) we just posted on the Lockdown game page.
