Silent Hill 2 Gets A Little Louder

PS2 unable to do 5.1 surround in real-time? "Ain't no thang" says Konami.

FGN Online had an interesting little blurb on Konami's sequel to undoubtedly one of the scariest games of all time, Silent Hill. While pundits have claimed that it's not possible to pull off full 5.1 surroud sound while in-game (although as The Bouncer shows, it's quite simple to encode into CG movies), Konami has apparently settled on their own solution, and it comes from the boys at Sony.

S-Force is a middleware solution that allows "3D" sound from just 2 speakers. According to Sony, the technology can deliver positional audio a la tradional surround sound setups. This has been attempted on PC's for a while, and while the effect can make seem like sound is hitting from a wider angle -- even the sides -- it remains to be seen if Sony's technology can genuinely fool the ear into hearing things behind you.

Luckily, the game and the admittedly ambitious sound design will be on show at the Fall Tokyo Game Show in just a few weeks. We'll have details from there.
