Dream Factory, developers of the much anticipated PS2 action/adventure title, The Bouncer, recently sat down with the folks over at IGN to discuss the Playstation2. Here's an exerpt:[blockquote]Strengths and Weaknesses
The strength is definitely the remarkable improvements to the graphical and audio expressions. The weakness is that since the PS2 is new hardware, the development environment is not fully set up. It has effected the amount of work and efficiency for the programmers, but with their experience and technical knowledge, The Bouncer is shaping up to be a game that pushes the limits of the PS2. The limited V-RAM compared to the PS2's polygon rendering ability has definitely been a hurdle to overcome. It's all up to how the picture is developed and balanced as a whole.
Anti-aliasing Issues
The game is very smooth, with the help of high-resolution pictures and visual adjustments done by the lighting and filtering techniques.
Middleware
Soft Image, Power Animator, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.; 70% of the work in The Bouncer is done with Soft Image. We also create our own tools as needed during the development process.
Emotion Engine
It has incredible performance capacity and tremendous potential. But to bring out the best of the EE, we need the right concepts, talent and capital that are on a completely different level than in the past. Clearing that hurdle is the real challenge.
Maximizing the power of the EE is not the goal in all cases. Technology exists, or is a tool to help express creativity; the goal is not to create for the sake of technology. How to utilize the EE depends on the concept.
After all, the EE isn't a unit on its own -- it's interconnected many elements, such as GS and sound SPU -- and seeks balance with those elements. Only when the right balance is there, will we be able to see its real power.
Graphics Synthesizer
PS2 has brought the graphics capability to the next level. A good balance between the Emotion Engine is the issue. [/blockquote]Sounds like good news to me. Now all we need is for The Bouncer to come out and all will be right in the world.
