Keeping rather mum on the topic since E3 2004, Namco has finally allowed some news on Tekken 5 to slip from its tongue, announcing that the game would be arriving in North America in Q1 2005 as a PlayStation 2 exclusive. The game's high hopes this time around reside in delivering unmatched graphics and the "ultimate" fighting game this side of the world.

Tekken 5 will propel gamers of all ages to the next level in the fighting genre,” promises Yoshi Niki, Business Unit Director with Namco Hometek Inc. “With Tekken 5’s completely new fighting engine, customizable characters and interactive environments, no fighting game fan will want to be without it.”

Tekken 5's story line picks up right after the completion of the fourth King of the Iron Fist Tournament, where a rather fierce battle between father and son takes place at the Mishima Zaibatsu headquarters. Though Jin emerges victorious against Heihachi, he spares the lives of both he and his father, Kazuya, in honor to his peace-loving mother. As Jin then departs, Honmaru is attacked by an onslaught of Jacks with Heihachi and Kazuya caught in the action. To save his own tail, Kazuya sacrifices Heihachi into the swarm of Jacks, and an explosion soon after destroys and an onlooker jumps to conclusions to reporting that "Heihachi Mishima is dead." With beliefs in that the reign of the Mishima Zaibatsu will come to an end, The King of the Iron Fist Tournament 5 commences to crown a replacement for Heihachi.

The fifth installment of the series brings to the table three new characters, making a total of 20 characters appear as default, though many can be unlocked. In a new twist to Tekken, players will be able to use money acquired from fighting to customize their character with numerous accessories, hats, glasses and costumes. Characters, as always, will have their own set of killer techniques, with returning favorites sporting upgraded moves and combos. In addition, Tekken 5 will include a bonus action/adventure game that'll introduce a side story to the fighting sequences.

Expect Tekken 5 to strike a blow into North American stores in early 2005, and keep it hear as we keep you updated over the coming months. Be sure to hit up our media section for first screens of the game!
