The Soul Burns Thrice

Namco’s third Soul Calbur fighter is finally golden.

Namco’s going to catch a lot of flack for kicking out Soulcalibur III on just the PS2, but it’s hard to deny minimizing development costs while delivering a game on 90+ million consoles. It makes sense from a moolah standpoint, but there are still a few fans out there bummed. Well whip out the tissues, boys and girls, cause here come the waterworks: Soulcalibur III has gone gold.

Three new characters (Zasalamel, Setsuka and the uberboob-heavy Tira), the ability to create your own character (complete with sex, weapon and fighting style choices), and a deeper storyline finally dig deeper into the tales of the Soul Calibur and Soul Edge, the legendary blades wielded by good and evil.

New stages complement the new characters, of course, but the biggest additions are an updated return of the Soul Arena mode that offers conditions for winning fights, plus the all-new Chronicles of the Sword, a real-time strategy game using the SCIII cast. For series historians, a Museum mode shows past info and current game unlocks.

“Fighting game fans should look no further than SoulCalibur III for the most exciting fighting experience available on the PlayStation 2 in 2005,” beamed Yoshi Niki, Business Unit Director with Namco Hometek Inc. “Soulcalibur III does justice to the legendary franchise with incredibly detailed graphics, a vast selection of playable characters and challenging new gameplay modes including real time strategy.”

The game’s done, folks, and it’s been sent off to the factory for mass pressing. We only have to wait for exactly two weeks before the goods are finally ours. Start counting the days.
