Join The Faction... Again
THQ announced today that the sequel to last years hit PS2 game Red Faction is in the works.
Published: January 25, 2002
Red Faction was one of the most groundbreaking and original PS2 titles to be released last year, and it's great success has THQ developer Volition working to improve upon well... just about everything that was in the first one. The most important and awesome of which is now dubbed an "enhanced Geo-Mod Engine".
The president of Volition, Mike Kulas, just emphasized this point by saying that "the enhancements we've made to the Geo-Mod engine will allow players to completely interact with a game world, where destroying and altering the environment become an integral part of gameplay."
As those of you who have played the original RF remember, blowing through walls with remote mines and other high potency weapons only was a minor factor in the objectives. So it looks as if Volition is going to be building on that concept to make it as different from any other first-person-shooter out there as they possibly can. Which is great because more and more games nowadays lack drastically original concepts and fail to deliver anything that is little different than anything that's already out.
While details are sketchy at best, THQ & Volition promise "blistering action, an engaging storyline, highly detailed graphics and a number of multi-player options", so it is doubtful that they're not putting everything they've got into making this all the first title was and more.
The release date for the time being is set for sometime during the Winter of 2002. We'll bring you more details on Red Faction 2 as soon as we can beat them out of THQ. ;-) But for the time being, make sure to check out our review of the original for what this Geo-Mod engine is all about, as well as what the plot of the new game will be based on.
