In an unfortunate hit today, Volition, masterminds of the PS2 RPG-hit Summoner (and that funny-ass preview movie of the main characters playing Dungeons & Dragons), has announced that their groundbreaking First-Person Shooter Red Faction would be delayed until May. [At this point in the article, the author of this article requests that you join him in a cyber-moment of silence, thank you.]
Red Faction has become touted as the next revolution in FPSs because of Volition's first-of-it's-kind Geo-Mod system that allows for near 100% player interaction with his/her surrounding environment. In simpler terms (and to borrow a line from the Vigilante 8 series), the Geo-Mod system allows you to basically "blow sh*t up." For example – a quick scenario. Say you were caught be hind a rock or boulder pinned down by one lonely little sniper up in a tower (those who have played Metal Gear Solid can reminisce with me on that one). Instead of patiently waiting and counting the number of shots fired to find out when the sniper has to reload a clip to pick him or her out of the tower, you can simply pull out your trusty rocket launcher and blow out 1 or 2 of the supports and watch the sniper helplessly fall to their death. (Laughing at this point in the game would be optional.) Unfortunately, now you and I will have to wait 2 more months until the PlayStation 2 market is "stronger" in order to pick up Red Faction.[blockquote]Brian Farrell, president and CEO of THQ, explained the shift: "In view of continuing uncertainty regarding PlayStation 2 (PS2) shipments, we anticipate that PS2 software sales at retail will remain slow through this year's first quarter. Accordingly, we have decided to move the release of Red Faction, our eagerly anticipated PS2 title, until May, when we expect a much healthier PS2 market. We believe that Red Faction has the potential to be a groundbreaking brand in its genre and the additional time will ensure that Red Faction meets those expectations."[/blockquote]Although you may be pounding you head against a wall right now, stop – there is some good news. With these extra 2 months, Volition has also stated that they will be going over Red Faction with a fine-tooth comb in order to get out all the bugs and tie up all the loose ends. Early demo versions of this game displayed the Geo-Mod system exquisitely but the framerate was iffy at best and the level scripting was downright grim. These extra months will allow Volition to shine it up real nice before my buddy and yours ol' Joey Lieberman comes in and bans the game for it's graphic content.
Damn, is it just me or does he sound like the dad on Alf? Anybody? Thought so...
