Sony Computer Entertainment America has had online gaming running for the PlayStation 2 for a full two years now, an experience that began on August 27, 2002. Since then, the PS2's online community has truly flourished, as the largest to date with 1,400 new registered users each day, and up to 50,000 each month. The success can be attributed to the SOCOM franchise, the hands-down most popular online title for the console, as well as the growing library of EA Sports games with online capabilities.
"Two years ago, we paved the way by taking creative risks for the industry to follow," said Andrew House, executive vice president, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Going into year three, we will continue to innovate through our online content offerings, and will embark on a series of initiatives that include enhanced community building and moving toward the monetization of the online initiative."
