Primal Soundtrack Imminent

Some of the best music ever made for games is getting a proper soundtrack release. Details inside.

We've already gushed over how good Primal's music was – not so much the goth-rock stuff from 16 Volt (though, again, the instrumental versions of songs in the game used as combat music were very fitting), but the orchestral arrangements crafted by U.K. duo Bob & Barn and performed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra are up there with work from Japanese game composers like Nobuo Uematsu or Yasunori Mitsuda, or American game songsmiths like Jeremy Soule. In fact, we feel the music is good enough to stand on its own as an album, a sentiment that Sony apparently shares.

In an unprecedented move for the publisher, Sony's decided to release an original score soundtrack for Primal – something they've never done for one of their games before. Up until the release of the humongoid seven-disc box set for Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, game soundtracks had been largely relegated to Japanese shelves. If you wanted a game's soundtrack, you usually had to import it. Square worked out a couple deals with Tokyopop for a few soundtracks of their releases (Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy, etc.), but that's probably the most high-profile publishing deal here in the U.S.

We got confirmation of the soundtrack from Bob & Barn themselves, gifted with the knowledge that the score will get a full worldwide release. The European release of the album will hit stores in May, with the U.S. and Japanese releases hitting in June and August, respectively. The soundtrack will be published under Silva Screen Records and will be available for purchase at both their online store and through major brick-and-mortar music outlets across the country.

We'll be snapping this up for play around the offices as soon as it hits shelves, and we heartily encourage you to do the same. For more info on Bob & Barn, including past and future projects and who the heck they are, head on over and check out their official site. Tell 'em PSX2.com sent ya.
