Atlus Bringing Odin Sphere Stateside

If you care at all about 2D games, you need to see this news. If you don't, read it anyway or we break your kneecaps. With love.

There are some publishers that we wish just for a second would take the form of a human so we could hug them collectively and say thank you. Maybe if they took the form of some kind of super busty cheerleader we might make out with 'em too. Might.

At the top of wish-we-could-hug-em-all list is Atlus, who brought us such 2D gems as Disgaea (that game's developer, Nippon Ichi Software, opened up their own US publishing wing and published the sequel, so they're on the make-out list too), the MegaTen games and the upcoming Persona 3, all of them at least in part examples of 2D art not being completely gone from video games.

No, technically they aren't all entirely 2D, but in a way that just makes us thankful that Atlus picked up the publishing and localization duties for Odin Sphere, which is delicously 2D -- and some of the sexiest 2D our little peepers have ever seen -- though sadly it won't make your pure 2D fantasies come true. Developed by Vanillaware, the Sphere is something of a spiritual successor to Princess Crown, widely hailed as one of the Sega Saturn's most gorgeous 2D Action RPGs. Not surprisingly, it was also published by Atlus (with some help from SEGA 10 years ago).

Since we're not only excited, but incredibly lazy, we're just going to paste in the text written by the hard working folks at Atlus. Besides, we need to really work on PowerTyping that CTRL+C/CTRL+V combo, y'know?

"The nations of Erion had always held an uneasy peace, as the various kings and queens watched each other for any signs of weakness. When the country of Valentine is obliterated by the power of an ancient artifact, it sparks a bloody war between the fairies of Ringford and the warriors of Ragnanival. Little do they know that they are acting out an almost-forgotten prophecy: one that, if fulfilled, will lead to the destruction of the entire world. Take control of the warrior princess Gwendolyn, daughter of Odin, and follow the threads of an intricately woven story as you uncover the truth behind the prophecy – and how to bring it to an end."

Oooohhh! Oooh, we say! The T-rated RPG will land in "late Spring 2007" (which doesn't give us much time to wait), and features full voice-overs, five playable characters with criss-crossing story arcs, cooking and alchemy systems and of course that 2D artwork that makes us just a liiiiittle excited. Yeah, that kind. We'll have more info on the game over the next few weeks. Check back soon!
