It's doubtful that any gamers that were born after, say, 1985 will recognize the name Nobunaga's Ambition. The games appeared on the NES, SNES, Genesis and various Game Boys early on, but here in the States, there's been something of a drought concerning the strategic goings-on of Japan's most infamous (and apparently demonic) ruler. Well, the days of wishing you could take a decidedly console-oriented strategic romp through the feudal Japanese countryside on your PlayStation 2 have paid off, because Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power is coming. See? All those nights crying into your pillow in the depths of despair paid off!

"The Nobunaga's Ambition series defined the simulation genre when it first debuted in 1983. The engrossing gameplay in many ways set the standard by which all other console simulation games would be measured," rightly boasts KOEI Senior VP and all-around awesome dude Amos Ip. "The franchise continues to be enjoyed around the world and has garnered numerous awards. Now, with Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power the engrossing strategy and simulation elements are presented in a rich 3D environment. KOEI is excited to reintroduce the Nobunaga's Ambition series to veteran players and to a new generation of fans."

Rise to Power is obviously the English name (it went by Tenkasousei if you're curious for some reason), which means all of the fancy pants changes to the familiar process of stomping through Japan to unify it with force (and tough love) will make an appearance here. The actual battles are now done in real-time 3D, taking place across seven campaigns that range from the Struggle for Power in 1551 to the clamor to fill the void left by Nobunaga when he died around 1582, though you are by no means stuck playing just as Nobunaga. Little additions like being able to wager your entire empire in battles should keep the epic clashes nice and interesting.

Directed by Romance of the Three Kingdoms impresario Kou Shibusawa, Rise to Power and both its grand scale battles and per-village micromanagement of government and resources alike will arrive on February 5th of next year.
