Armageddon is Nigh

Midway's final current-gen Mortal Kombat game has hit stores.

It is done. After nearly 15 years, the Mortal Kombat saga is coming to a close. Oh, we're sure we're going to see a next-gen version of the game at some point (the renaissance the series has seen in recent years have all but confirmed that a new chapter will start soon enough), but for now, the series as it has come to be known will end with this final chapter.

Luckily, Midway is sending it out with a bang. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is easily the biggest game the developers have ever put together. Featuring every single character that's appeared in the series thus far all in one game, plus an expanded Konquest mode that allows you to do a little adventuring beyond all those Fatalities, tons of create-a modes and an epic story to tie it all together, it's at least a proper send-off.

"Mortal Kombat: Armageddon marks a significant milestone in the franchise as it's the final Mortal Kombat title to be released on current generation systems," sobbed Steve Allison, Midway's chief marketing officer. "Mortal Kombat: Armageddon also contains gameplay features that series co–creator Ed Boon and team have always wanted to implement, such as create–a–fighter and create–a–fatality modes, and the option to choose from over 60 of the most popular Mortal Kombat fighters."

To ensure that everyone on the freakin' planet knows that the game has arrived, Midway will spend millions to hype the game. Ads on sites like IGN, WWE.com, Google, and GameSpot (we long for the day when we're included in advertising lists like that), TV commercials on SpikeTV, Comedy Central, MTV2, USA, Sci-Fi, Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel and ESPN/ESPN 2/ESPNews, plus tourneys and tours to show off the game should help drum up a sale or two, we're thinking.
