Armageddon Comes in Four Flavors

We're talking about Mortal Kombat here, and some very special editions of the newest game.

We'd brainstormed a couple of different intros to the story, making some sort of clever pun about the four Premium Editions of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon and some Four Horsemen reference, but then we realized that was the Apocalypse, not Armageddon. The battle's always more fun than the End Times anyway. So instead, we'll just give you the poop on what Midway has planned for their insanely big Mortal Kombat entry.

The gist of it is this: plunk down a few extra bucks (just $50, now, don't get all riled up just yet), and in addition to getting Armageddon, which includes every single MK character that's appeared in previous games, you'll get a fancy-pants metallic cover. Technically, there are four of 'em, the first is the simple dragon logo everyone's come to know, but the others will feature Kano & Sonya, Sindel & Shao Khan and Johnny Cage & Goro.

All versions have the same guts; the game you'd get for a little cheaper, plus animation cell cover art signed by one of the series' creators Ed Boon (John Tobias, the other half of MK, is no longer at Midway), an "arcade-perfect" version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and a hour-plus long bonus DVD that goes into the 50+ character roster in Armageddon, the "History of Fatalities."

It's not a bad little bonus for about $10 more, and you're still getting the main game, which is, as mentioned before, a MK fan's wet dream; every character from every Mortal Kombat to date, all in one game, and all brought into 3D using a modified version of the MK: Deception engine. Also included are a Create-A-Player Mode and even a Create-A-Fatality Mode, plus a expanded Konquest mode (first introduced in MK: Deadly Alliance as something of a light adventure game). We're hoping it plays a little like MK: Shaolin Monks, but then we're just suckers for the Mortal Kombat series.

Both the regular and Premium Edition versions of the game will go on sale at the same time: October 9th, so if you fancy some fun little bonuses with your game for minimal extra cost, you might want to plunk down the change for a pre-order. It's not necessary to get the game, but the PE version is limited. Just a word of warning.
