The Mods Squad Returns

No, that's not a typo, MTV's melding of music and games is back... whether you want it or not.

We got word from our peeps at MTV2 that the premiere of the second season of Video Mods is headed to a TV near you tonight. For those screaming at the monitor, demanding we tell them what the hell we're talking about, we offer this:

First, wipe off the monitor; all that spit's really gross, man. Secondly, calm down and relax. You may not know it by name, but you probably stumbled across the motion-captured freakfest by accident at least once while flipping past MTV or MTV2. Video Mods features what can loosely be described as "music videos" that swap out the original artists for video game characters. At times, it's impressively fitting, and it's always amusing, but some complained that the variety wasn't really there.

If the first episode is any indication, though, both artist participation and tracklists seem to have gotten a nice boost. The premiere will feature The Beastie Boys' own production of "Oh, Word?" from the "To the 5 Boroughs" album set to their characters created for NBA Street V3 using motion-capture data and directions from the trio themselves. Also included are versions of Blink-182's "All The Small Things" using characters from the [i]Spongebob Squarepants Movie[i] game, Yellowcard's "Only One" using Medal of Honor: European Assault (yeah, we're confused too), and an encore of My Chemical Romance's "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" with Death, Jr..

It's not all videos being shown; a peek at the Frag Dolls, that all-girl gamer clan and an interview with The Beastie Boys will fill in the spaces between Mods, and Death, Jr. drops in for a special appearance. You'll have to tune in to MTV2 tonight at 11PM Eastern to see it in motion, but if that's a bit too late, don't worry, you'll stumble across it while flipping channels at least a dozen times over the next few weeks.
