SlugFest Returns!

And for a mere $20, too.

As anyone even modestly involved in sports can tell, we're not really jocks around here. In fact, if a sports game doesn't have at least a half-baked "XTREEM" angle to it, we often won't give it a try for fear of the ass-handings we got from college roommates -- and some of us are still in college.

But we've got a big ol' soft spot for MLB SlugFest, Midway's completely irreverent and happily simplified baseball offering. After a two year break, we were starting to thing we wouldn't see another game. In many ways, that's true, given that Midway's final tenuous grasp on the Major League Baseball license will exclusively fall into 2K Sports hands soon, but at least we'll see a final SlugFest before then -- and quite possibly without some kind of death metal band behind the theme song!

"MLB SlugFest 2006 is the only adrenaline–style, officially MLB licensed baseball game on the market and we're very excited to be able to offer gamers the latest in the SlugFest franchise at a great value," offered Steve Allison, Midway's chief marketing officer. "At a competitive price point and in a year in which fewer than usual MLB licensed games exist, we’re certain that fans will embrace having a choice at retail, especially with the enhancements that we've been able to incorporate into MLB SlugFest 2006."

Yeah, about that competitive price point; Midway's going to be selling the game for an astonishing $20, and they've handed of development duties to Blue Shift, who handled the superlative Xbox port of the Dreamcast's much-loved Major League Baseball 2K3. The combination is certainly one hell of a way to make a last-ditch effort to save the franchise. It may not be able to continue on with the MLB name, but if Midway can keep the series afloat, they may not need to. Still at least this year we'll get the usual stadium and roster upgrades so the game feels like an MLB-licensed product.

We'll try our damndest to get our hands on some preview code as soon as possible and relay the details then.
