Sony Computer Entertainment America and 989 Sports announced today that Eric Chavez, third baseman for the Oakland A's, will be the cover athlete for MLB 2005. Chavez has been a rising star in Major League Baseball, as he is a two-time Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award winner and out of all American League third basemen, led with 101 RBIs and tied for first with his 29 homeruns.

"Eric Chavez has established himself as one of baseball's rising young stars," said Ami Blaire, director, product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Not only are we aligning ourselves with one of the best young power hitters in baseball, but we are working with four young, incredibly talented players in Chavez, Glaus, Green and Dunn who promise to put up outstanding numbers for many years to come. From marketing to product development, we are excited and honored to be working with some of the most dedicated and skilled players in baseball today."

Eric Chavez isn't the only baseball player to be working with 989 Sports on the game - Anaheim Angels third baseman Troy Glaus, Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Shawn Green, and Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn will be working with the company as contributors, consultants, and spokespersons.

MLB 2005 will be hit out of the park and into retail stores on the 16th of this month. For the full skinny on the game, be sure to check out our in-depth preview.
