The Legacy of Kain games have always seem just a bit shy of true greatness. While they've doubtlessly progressed well with the technology at hand – like in the case of Soul Reaver's lack of in-game load screens – the games never seemed to strike enough of a balance between story and action (Soul Reaver 2 felt like one cutscene after another, Blood Omen 2 was endless switch pulling). Ah, but all that looks like it's about to change with Crystal Dynamics' latest chapter in the series.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance will finally merge the two protagonists Kain and Raziel and include them both in the same game as playable characters. A completely revamped combat system and mouth-wateringly gorgeous new graphics engine all but ensure that this game will hook plenty of newcomers while ensuring LoK fans will still have plenty to sink their teeth into (okay, we promise, no more lame vampire clichés).

Still, talk is cheap, and as much as we could (and very soon will) gush about how great the game is turning out to be, it's better that we have something to show you. To that end, Eidos has finally pulled the wraps off the super sexy web site for the game, showcasing character and story details, screenshots, trailers, wallpapers, AIM buddy icons, and more.

The new combat engine really has to be seen in action to be understood, but imagine taking the best elements from Devil May Cry's combos, upping them with even more detail, and adding a more vampiric slant that somehow manages to transform the "Cool" feeling that DMC offered into something infinitely more rewarding. Add in Crystal Dynamics' penchant for crafting solid, engrossing storylines and you could be witnessing a serious Game of the Year contender.

Head on over to the new Legacy of Kain site now and make sure you check out the trailer, but make sure you slip on a bib first to catch all that drool.
