It's finally time to see the original Star Wars trilogy in a whole new way.

It's been a while in coming, but we've finally got a follow-up to the nearly universally appealing LEGO Star Wars. LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy preserves the same quirky, tongue-in-cheek approach to George Lucas' sci-fi three-peat, but actually dips back to source material that may resonate even more strongly with the older crowd as much as it does with kids -- which is the idea.

"LEGO Star Wars II offers fans a brand new way to experience the classic trilogy and is a terrific addition to the largest selection of Star Wars toys and games already available at Toys "R" Us stores nationwide," pitched Ron Boire, President of Toys "R" Us U.S. "The first LEGO Star Wars was a fan favorite, and we believe families will be excited by the chance to step into the roles of their favorite, original Star Wars characters in LEGO Star Wars II. To celebrate the launch, Toys "R" Us will offer an exclusive promotion for customers who purchase LEGO Star Wars II during the week of the game's release."

Now there's something you don't see every day. A quote from a retailer in a press release for a game. Such is the unifying power of the Star Wars license, we guess. In fact, there was another quote by someone at Microsoft, but it was just as bad about self-promotion as that Toys "R" Us quote, so we left it out.

What we didn't leave out -- at least in terms of our coverage of the game so far -- has been reports from the producers at LucasArts and developer TT Games. If you haven't already seen the expansive seven-part developed diary, [ps2feature=20]you seriously need to[/ps2feature]. It offers a peek at nearly every part of the game, discussing what was improved or changed over the previous game and peppering things with plenty of geeky references.

We're going to geek out the old-fashioned way with both the PS2 version and the PSP version, both of which are shipping to stores today. We'll have a full, proper review when we emerge from our ReviewCave™©®.
