May The Force Be With You… Again

Honestly, with how well the first LEGO Star Wars sold, is this really coming as a surprise?

Developers, if you’re looking for a recipe for success, it apparently involves giving a classic film franchise a kid-friendly treatment. Just ask Traveller's Tales: its LEGO Star Wars crawled all the way up to the No. 13 spot for best-selling games of 2005, all while scooping up accolades from critics and giddy gamers alike.

…can you guess what happens next?

In an announcement that rings with the sound of opening cash registers, LucasArts and TT Games (who have apparently ousted Eidos for publishing rights) have made known their plans to delve deeper into the Star Wars series and bring LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (a working title, but we’d say that works just fine) to grand total of seven consoles this fall. Good gravy.

"Whether it was your first gaming experience or you've played everything released since Pong, the first LEGO Star Wars was one of those rare video games that everyone enjoyed," remarked Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. "With LEGO Star Wars II, LucasArts is working with TT Games and Traveller's Tales not only to set players loose through the original three chapters of the Star Wars Saga, but also to make this feel like the true sequel our fans have been clamoring for."

Getting the LEGO treatment this time around (with plenty of comical relief to go around) is the Star Wars Trilogy, consisting of Episode IV A New Hope, Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI Return of the Jedi. Relive timeless scenes from the movie as the Rebel Alliance attempts to take down the Galactic Empire and rebuild a shattered galaxy.

As any rightful sequel would do, LEGO Star Wars II packs in some noteworthy new features, namely the ability to hop on and off vehicles and creatures and ride ‘em as you please. An added Free Mode allows for swapping the parts for and customizing 50 new playable characters, with 56 more that can be unlocked with a game save from the first LEGO Star Wars. Playable mini-kit vehicles, spiffy new character-specific attacks and maneuvers, and an optional advanced mode join the list of what’s in store.

"TT Games is delighted to have formed a partnership with LucasArts for LEGO Star Wars II," grinned Tom Stone, managing director of TT Games. "The first game was an absolute joy to work on, and we're excited to deliver even more fun and creativity, this time with more features to work on and the original trilogy as the game's focus."

LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy begins its uber-console assault in fall, and no one -- no one, we say! -- is safe. Best keep ‘er here for fair warning.
