Why? Just Cause.
Author: Sam Bishop
Published: July 27, 2006
We didn't even make it to the actual story body before pulling some really lame play on Eidos and Avalanche's free-roaming jungle romp, that's how short on creativity we are today. Let it be a lesson: just because the voices tell you it's a brilliant idea to try to drink your way down to Tijuana, that doesn't mean it's necessarily a good idea. When you wake up the next day and you've only made it six blocks, that tells you something. It's a lesson, man. About pacing yourself.

Be we digress. A lot. Technically, this story is about Eidos' fancy-pants design department finally pulling the wraps off their Just Cause web site. Now, see, Just Cause is more than just a name custom built for witty wordplay (and yet we still made a bad joke), it's a truly next-gen free-roaming game. So why are we talking about it when it's only coming to a current-gen Sony system? For that matter, what is a next-gen game concept even doing on current-gen system? Three little words:

I. Love. You

Three More:

100. Million. PS2s.

That's a big number, and plenty of zeroes trailing that lonely number one, meaning why not leverage that kind of install base -- even if it means having developers at Avalanche Studios (not to be confused with Tak developers Avalanche Software) scale down their software to fit on the comparatively ancient PS2 hardware. Something tells us simulating stuff like humidity and 250,000 acres of land isn't going to look as fancy as we've seen so far.

Nevertheless, you can get a peek at what the other versions of the game will look like with trailers, wallpaper, screenshots, gameplay movies, and the usual other web site goodies at the official site. If you do decide to tell 'em we sent you, try to hold back those tears while you do it, okay? Our next gen machine will be here soon.
