Published: March 12, 2001
This week, Rockstar Games handed down new information regarding the long-awaited third-installment in the legendary Grand Theft Auto series; Grand Theft Auto 3. The game itself has received some major changes from the first two installments, and it plans to hit the PlayStation 2 in a big way.
Of course, the biggest noticeable change in Grand Theft Auto 3 will be the remarkable viewpoint change from an overhead 2D look to a full 3D viewpoint. A newly integrated storyline has also been put into place, which will add much more depth to the series. New vehicles such as boats, helicopters and planes will now be accessible by the player.
In spite of these changes, the gameplay elements that made Grand Theft Auto 2 a major hit on the PC platform have been kept intact. Players will still be able to travel anywhere through the environments, making for a very open system. The major radical difference being that the game has adopted a more realistic three-dimensional look.
The game will take place in Liberty City, which consists of three districts; Industrial, Commercial and Suburban. Each of these districts will provide the player with three levels of gameplay. As the player continues to progress through the game, each of these districts will open up. Liberty City itself is loosely based upon the characteristics of New York City, with its various boroughs. Additionally, the three districts are interconnected through bridges, tunnels and various water routes.
The non-linear gameplay that made the first two GTA titles famous will still be perfectly intact. Players will be able to take on any challenge, and choose from many different options. Besides the primary missions, many additional side missions will co-exist, such as taxi jobs, scrap dealing, car dealing and other various side missions that can be carried out at any time.
Another important addition in Grand Theft Auto 3, will be that of a functional clock mechanism. Some missions will now have to be carried out at certain times, rather than 'right away' as seen in the previous games. New weather and handling changes could also take place, thus changing the difficulty of the missions by making roads slippery, affecting the handling of a vehicle, and changing your visibility factor.
As with the previous games, streets will now be populated with workers and businessman during the day, with clubbers, local drunks and shady criminal types taking over the streets at night. These people along with your character will be polygon based as supposed to the 2D based characters found in the previous GTA titles.
Players will once again be able to work their way through the hierarchies of a typical gang. Of course, the police will once again have a huge impact in this game, and in your missions.
New added physics and handbrake turns have been added to the vehicles in order to add more realism into gameplay. Grand Theft Auto 3 is currently on track for an October 2001 release onto the PlayStation 2 platform. Below are 24 preliminary screenshots for this game. We will have more information as it becomes available.
