According to recent reports from various Tokyo publications, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) is considering a price cut for the PlayStation2 console in Japan.
While no official comments have been made by SCEI directly, reports show that the price of the console may be dropped to as low as 10,000 yen, or $86 in U.S. dollars. Such a massive price cut would be made in order for the PS2 to compete with the likes of the Microsoft XBox and Nintendo Gamecube.
Kenichi Fukunaga; Director for SCEI stated the following on Sony's upcoming strategy against rival consoles:
[blockquote]Certainly we plan to oppose the Xbox, but we're not targeting any other platforms. Beneath the surface, a war of words has already begun [between Microsoft and Sony]. Some people believe the Xbox is more powerful, but we're not using computer-based componets. I'm confident they won't be able to match the level of expression of our exclusive semiconductors."[/blockquote]We will have more information on this as it develops.
