Midway pulled the wraps off Haven: Call Of The King, the upcoming platformer/racer/adventure/shooter hybrid currently in development by UK-based Traveler's Tales, and due out for release on "next-generation platforms" in Fall of this year.
While details are still rather scarce, is has been revealed that the game will chronicle the journey of Haven, a boy wrestling with his fate as a slave at the hands of Lord Vetch. Vetch has enslaved and killed Haven and his people, but as the young man discovers the legend of the Golden Voice, a bell that can be rung in the most dire of circumstances, it falls to him to bulk up and rescue his people.
"It always has been said that you can't combine excellent shooting, racing, flying, platforming and other gameplay mechanics and make a rock solid game. Haven: Call Of The King has done this on every level," boasted Helene Sheeler, Midway's VP of Marketing. "Haven: Call Of The King features unrivaled gameplay with an almost endless combination of action-movie-styled gameplay elements and an engaging storyline, highly stylized characters and crisp cinematics."
Time will tell how the game actually turns out, but the technology in place certainly looks sound. The game engine promises to meld a handful of genres into one game without detracting from the story or gameplay as a whole, so gamers should be able to switch from platformer to shooter somewhat smoothly. The engine also allows for travel from the planet's surface, through the atmosphere and into space and back seamlessly, something that should turn a few heads. We'll have more as it's announced.
