More Awards for Guitar Hero

The accolades keep on comin'.

Guitar Hero rocks. Anyone who's played the game for about 5 minutes knows the way it slips its digital tendrils into the grey matter of your brain and sucks you in. That a game that requires a goofy looking guitar controller has caught on so well says all you need to know about Harmonix Music System, the game's publisher. Fortunately, many of the same people in the industry bitten by the GH bug are in a position to dole out a few awards, though most of those were around the game's release.

PC World, however, has seen fit to deem it one of the 2006 Best Products of the Year. The game clocked in at number 19 out of 100, and, the game's publisher, RedOctane, is all to quick to point out, the only other video game product that made it onto the list, was the Xbox 360, which rolled in at a lowly 89. Not bad for a game that's only been out for just under seven months, eh?

"Products that win PC World's World Class Awards set the standard for excellence in the IT and consumer electronics industries," explains PC World EIC Harry McCracken.

Well, uh, thanks, Harry, that puts things into perspective rather nicely. This is of course good news (and good press) for RedOctane and Harmonix, who are happily charging forward with Guitar Hero II. Though we morn the loss of RedOctane as a spunky little start-up from Sunnyvale now that they've been picked up by Activision, we're still happy to see our buddies over at Harmonix finally getting some love after FreQency and Amplitude got shafted by consumers. Go buy those games, people, they're great.

Aw, crap, that's it, Guitar Hero inter-office contest, right now! Expect the rest of the news today to follow... tomorrow.
