Ah, how we've longed for the day when Rockstar Games would finally confirm the newest installment in its groundbreaking Grand Theft Auto franchise, and that day is today. The innovative Take-Two publishing division has officially announced that the newest installment in its revolutionary Grand Theft Auto franchise to be Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Phew! Overwhelming, isn't it? Prepare for more: they have also revealed that the game will be in U.S. stores on October 19, 2004 (which means a ship date on the 18th) and in European stores on October 22. This follows the October release trend that Rockstar Games has grown accustomed to, shipping out Grand Theft Auto III on October 22, 2001 and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City almost a year later on October 27, 2002. Nonetheless, we're confident that an entire year extra of development time will pay off in the new installment.
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be developed by Rockstar North, the same talented team that handled GTA: Vice City and GTA3 (although they were DMA Design then), exclusively for the PlayStation 2. San Andreas, if you recall, was a San Francisco clone featured in the original Grand Theft Auto game. We can only hypothesize that GTA: San Andreas will be set in a city similar to sunny San Fran. Who knows what vices lie ahead?
"In the past couple of years, we have put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to ensure we do everything possible to exceed people's expectations with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas," oozed Sam Houser, President of Rockstar Games. "Even though we still have eight months to go, we are starting to become very proud of what we have achieved and we can't wait to get the game into players' hands."
The announcement has put an end to the months of speculation that have been circulating about what the next GTA game's basis would be. If you'll recall, Rockstar took the liberty of registering a handful of domain names and trademarks centering around the next installment in the franchise, including the now-confirmed Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto: Bogota, Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo, and perhaps the most likely name for the game, Grand Theft Auto: Sin City. This speculated title was rumored to be based in a Las Vegas-like city, inhibited by more vices and corruption than Vice City could handle. Does this mean that locations such as Tokyo, Bogota, and the fictional Sin City won't be future settings for the Grand Theft Auto games Time shall tell.
Leslie Benzies, President of Rockstar North, beamed, "We are extremely humbled by the success of the Grand Theft Auto series and it has made us push ourselves further than ever to create a title in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas that will hopefully redefine the Grand Theft Auto series and revolutionize open-ended gameplay and video game production values."
Details on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, as you can imagine, are practically nonexistent at the moment. What Rockstar Games has dished out, though, is the game's official box art. Very dark and brooding, wouldn't you agree? You can bet your bottom dollar that we'll keep you updated on any litte detail that slips out about the game. Until then – E3 2004, here we come!
