Call it one of the coolest/oddest ways to drum up support the games industry has seen in a while (certainly since the dot-com days), but Sony Computer Entertainment America has decided the best way to offer a themed promotion for Gran Turismo 4, is to just give away free gasoline -- if you live in LA, that is.
Here's the deal: anyone wanting free gas need only show up at the Conoco Phillips 76 station in Santa Monica (1402 Santa Monica Blvd. if you want that whole "address" thing) from 7 to 9 AM next Tuesday the 22nd. The date isn't some random happenstance, either; it's the day GT4 finally hits store shelves, so those of you lucky enough to be around Santa Monica in dire need of gas can fill up and then zip off to the nearest store and swipe a copy of the game.
Sure, the deal would have made more of an impact up here in San Francisco where we have to sell our kidneys to fill up with the gas prices being so effing high (highest in the nation, woo hoo!), but that's probably why Sony opted to let petrol-hungry gamers do their business where the gas is slightly cheaper (and, y'know, everyone drives a car).
We'll sit here and pout while we play eeny-meeny with our lungs to figure out which one we'll be hawking to make it to the games store to pick up a copy of the game next week.
