PStwo Finally Official
That slimmer, lighter PS2 console isn't such an improbable possibility after all.
Published: September 22, 2004
We saw it with the PlayStation 1 – a few years after the boxy grey console hit the market, a smaller, sleeker, and heck, milkier make of the system called the PSone rocked retailers. And now, according to an announcement made by Sony Computer Entertainment, a new model of the PlayStation 2 (SCPH-70000) will be coming to the United States and Europe on November 1 of this year, and two days later in Japan on the 3rd.
So how has everyone's favorite black box been remade? Well, realistically, it's been slimmed down to a new lightweight design, with internal volume cut down by 75% and a new thickness of 2.8 cm, almost three times thinner than the 7.8 cm of the current PS2 model. With the PlayStation 2 online community on the rise, it's only fitting for the new model to be equipped with an integrated Ethernet port. Need a mental picture of how small this sucker'll be? SCE suggests that the size of the new model is almost as small as a hardcover book. Much more fitting for your backpack, wouldn't you agree?
The announcement of this new PlayStation 2 was undoubtedly timed to pump up anticipation for the Tokyo Game Show 2004, being held from Friday, September 24 to Sunday the 26th. The PStwo (as we're naturally referring to it for now, though the name's not official) will be showcased at the event, meaning Japanese journalists and gamers alike (as well as those making the trip to the island) are in for quite the treat. No media thus far, but expect first shots to surface once the event gets into full swing this Friday. Stay tuned for more!
*UPDATE*
Speak of the devil! Today, Sony Computer Entertainment confirmed the price of the PStwo (that name's still unofficial, though) to be $149.99, in addition to release some new specs on the system. The slimmer console will have dimensions of 230mm x 28mm x 152mm, weighing in at only 900g. Compact indeed.
We know you've been waiting for those first screens and believe it or not, we've got 'em! These numerous shots, some standing in comparison to the current PlayStation 2, truly exemplify how much smaller the PStwo is to its big brother. Monday, November 1 will be the official North American street date – see what's in store by peeping below!
