One of Japan's industry authoratives, Mainichi Interactive has just reported that some gamers in Japan are having problems getting Gran Turismo 3 to run on their PS2 systems. According to Mainichi Interactive, the problem arises in the "deterioration of the optical reading device of the DVD drive." While Sony has no official comment except that they say it isn't the game's fault, they are currently investigating the problem.
Unfortunately, there is no easy answer. Gamers will have to fix their system at their own cost if the game isn't properly working. Although Sony will cover the shipping costs, gamers will have to cover a 9000 yen ($100 US) fee for the fix and will have to sacrifice their systems for a week.
No official word was given as to how many gamers have reported this problem, only that Mainichi describes the number of reports as "abundant," without giving specific numbers. More to come as it develops.
