God of War, GT4 Hit $20

There’s never been a better time to get your mitts on two of 2005’s best.

We gamers have it tough. On top of having to constantly take heat from outspoken parents, public officials and health specialists who are convinced videogames will be the death of a generation, we are faced with a slightly more pressing issue every year: too many good games. With many of us on tight budgets, it’s not everyday we can simply shell out 50 bucks in exchange for an eight hour experience, albeit an enjoyable one.

Companies know darn well the struggle of a frugal gamer, and the remedy comes in the form of promotions akin to Sony’s “Greatest Hits” program. Sure, it means waiting a year for a game to actually sell enough copies (400,000, to be exact) to warrant having a big red strip stamped on its cover, but with a reduced $19.99 that comes along with achievement, it means finally getting a chance to dig into some of the year’s best for a good chunk of the consumer population.

That might also explain the slight tingling sensation we feel in saying that Sony Computer Entertainment America has inducted two new titles into its Greatest Hits lineup: God of War and Gran Turismo 4. The two titles gobbled up more than their fair share of awards last year and it shows, as the pair has accounted for sales in excess of 2.5 million units.

"With more than one billion pieces of software shipped worldwide, PlayStation 2 is the fastest-selling gaming platform on the market," grinned Jack Tretton, executive vice president, co-COO, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Our collection of 'Greatest Hits' games gives our customers access to hundreds of titles, including some of our most popular, award-winning games, at a value price."

God of War and Gran Turismo 4 should be decking the shelves either today or tomorrow with their slick new boxes and $20 price tags. Here’s lookin’ at you, bargain buyers.
