Building a Better Monster
Think you've got the imagination to create something Kratos could square off against? Read on...

Though many things have been said about God of War, almost universal acclaim went to the monster designs (and the ways in which Kratos, the game's lead character, dispatched them). The game was steeped in Greek mythology, leading to the kind of cyclopes, harpies, minotaurs and such that one would associate with mythology, but it was also willing to take a few detours, twisting and warping things until they fit the uniquely near-fantasy tone and setting that the game offered.
Somewhere, though, in the dark corners of the game community, there were probably folks that said "aw, screw that, I can make a better monster." Well, peanut gallery, this is your chance. Sony is offering one lucky gamer the chance to win themselves a PS2 if their design is picked. The God of War II team themselves (with a little help from Sony's Gamer Advisory Panel higher-ups) will scan the lot of entries and pluck just five monster designs to be poured over in more detail.
Of those five, one will make the cut, judged by the GAP, and earn the winner their own PS2. Now, chances are, if they've played God of War and thus have an idea of what kind of monsters are in it, they probably have a PS2 of their own already, but let's just ignore that for a second. Even if your design isn't the top pick, if you manage to make it to the final round of votes, you'll walk away with one of five Kratos statues being made. Given that only 120 of them were ever made, this is something of a collectable, and a fine prize if you ask us.
Interested? Good, now here's the fine print to make sure you actually make the cut:
You must:
-Be a GAP member, which is invite-only, but fairly easy to get if you've registered on the PlayStation Underground web site.
-Create a completely original monster
-Use any medium you like (Photoshop, Illustrator, original drawing, etc.)
-Submit your creation in .jpg or .pdf format
-Include a monster biography with his or her history, powers, skills, weapons, strengths, etc., and anything else that makes your monster unique
-Send your submission to this e-mail address no later than 7/26/06
-Make sure you meet the age requirement—you must be 17 or older to enter
And there you have it. Even if you don't submit an entry, if you're part of the GAP, you can vote when the time comes. Everybody wins! Unless you're not a GAP member, of course, then you just lose.
