Kratos is coming back to the PS2, and he’s as pissed off as he's ever been.

When you deliver a game like God of War, one that’s groundbreaking enough to reinvent a genre and send shockwaves throughout the industry (not to mention rake in a slew of “Game of the Year” accolades), there’s a good chance people are going to want to see a lot more of it. And there’s a good chance they’ll get it.

Today, we're just so fortunate, as Sony Computer Entertainment America has announced the development of God of War II for the PlayStaiton 2. Once again crafted by SCEA’s Santa Monica Studios, the sequel promises all-new brutal combat, epic boss battles and a new revenge-driven quest through the world of Greek mythology.

"The 2005 Game of the Year Award winning franchise continues as we're excited to bring God of War II to PlayStation 2 fans furthering our commitment to the platform for years to come," beamed Susan Nourai, director, online and product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "By taking the highly successful features of its predecessor and presenting players with new moves, puzzles, and more bosses to defeat, God of War II is set to raise the bar and deliver a new gameplay experience."

In God of War II, players will once again assume the role of ex-Spartan and all-around badass, Kratos. (*spoiler alert*) After rising to divinity and claiming the Olympius throne as God of War, Kratos finds himself reassuming his former brutality, displaying far more ruthless than Ares, the former God, ever did. To put his torment to an end once and for all, Kratos must travel to the farthest reaches of earth, defeating all that stands in his way, in order to do the impossible and attempt to alter his fate.

"In the gaming world, it's rare that a sequel equals, let alone eclipses the original, but I think this is going to be the exception to the rule in terms of quality, gameplay and story,” claimed David Jaffe, creator of God of War. “I always said that God of War was my dream game, well no longer, God of War II really is the game I've always wanted to play."

And for good reason, as God of War II takes what was great about its predecessor and logically expands upon that. All of the huge combo moves from the first game are back in action, and are joined by a host of new ones. The game’s magic system is now more elemental-based, utilizing the power of wind, ice and much more. Players will encounter some of Greece’s most memorable mythological beasts, including Cyclops, Cerebus and the Flying Gryphon, along with a new cast of enemies and bosses. The dark, violent world will be teeming with plenty of engaging, story-guided puzzles (with brutal consequences for failure), and treacherous new landscapes such as the undiscovered Sisters of Fate and the Dark Swamp.

God of War II will journey to retail in Q1 2007, making an exclusive return to the PlayStation 2. It looks like there’s some steam left in our current-gen console after all. We'll be back with updates just as soon as we get our hands on 'em.

UPDATE: The official God of War II site is up and running. Don't get too excited over the options, though: the Trailer and Concert Art sections are yet to launch, though you can peep the first screens of the game. Be sure to check back with the site, and of course we at TPS, for more soon.
