Ghost Rider Goes to 2K

Ok, so maybe we saw this coming.

Towards the end of 2005, the New Jersey-based Majesco saw some financial rockiness that forced the company to sell some of its most promising licenses, not which of the least were a pair of the comic-based breed: Ghost Rider and The Darkness. The latter, coming to us in the form of a gritty first-person shooter, saw its next-gen fate in the publishing hands of 2K Games, and as confirmed today, it looks as though Johnny Blaze will be cruising down the same road. You'd think 2K was just waiting for Majesco to fork over those lucrative, high-profile titles...

It's been months since we've heard of the night-riding happenings of Marvel's iconic supernatural superhero, but according to 2K, we'll be treated to "an immersive, supernatural third person world with a seamless blend of hand-to-hand combat and high-speed motorcycle action."

Ghost Rider is one of Marvel Comics’ most successful comic book franchises and we’re thrilled to bring this beloved series to a broader audience,” grinned Christoph Hartmann, Managing Director of 2K Games. “The video game will build upon the popular elements from the Ghost Rider franchise and intertwine its thrilling action and original, compelling content into a gaming experience fans will love.”

Taking note from the Columbia Pictures feature film (the one with Nicholas Cage, remember? No? Well, just play along), which will cover the crux of the stunt rider's story (primarily his soul-selling dealings with the vile Mephistopheles that led him to ride the night playing host to the powerful supernatural entity, Ghost Rider), the game will continue the storyline in casting players as Blaze in all his evil-avenging glory. Expect to come across plenty of characters and motorcycles from the comic book and movie to boot.

“Marvel is excited about the upcoming Ghost Rider video game,” yipped Ames Kirshen, Vice President, Interactive at Marvel Entertainment. “2K Games is creating an innovative game that showcases a combination of amazing hand-to-hand combat and motorcycle action intertwined with compelling third person play that offer gamers a truly unique and diverse gameplay experience.”

Ghost Rider will be off to stores in February 2007 on consoles and handhelds, in a simultaneous release with its silver screen debut (with the uberhot Eva Mendes, woowoo!). Keep 'er here for the updates!
