Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has remained somewhat quiet about their internet/online plans for months now. Only in the last week have brand new details come out in the open regarding Sony's online strategy with the PlayStation 2.
At yesterday's pre-E3 press conference, SCEA revealed five new games that will be supported by Sony's online network, and will feature online multiplay options. These games include Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Twisted Metal Online, Tribes II, Frequency and SOCOM. You can read more details regarding Twisted Metal Online by clicking here.
SCEA featured both Tribes II and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater as part of their online demonstration with the PlayStation 2. Both games were networked and fully playable by visitors at the booth. What's even more interesting is that these games were also linked with other games from across the L.A. Convention Center, at Sierra's and Activision's booths.
Much like you would expect with a Local Area Network (LAN) connection, there were no noticeable lag or slowdown problems readily visible. The average cable modem or DSL service has the ability to offer a similar performance to that of a LAN connection.
We will have more news regarding Sony's online plans as we get it.
