Time to Wise Up
Unless you wanna get popped in the mouth by Kyle Travers. Oh, he’ll do it too.

In retrospect, last year marked a surprising and very much welcome comeback of the beat ‘em up. In reality, half of them were garbage. Sure, we had a blast reliving a 1979 gang flick and traversing Outworld in co-op fashion, but cleaning out rival gangs and drug cartel and doing so with shameless amounts of ‘tude? Mm, not so much so.
Capcom has already taken its first stab at the modern day beat ‘em up with lackluster results, but if a nod to a classic fighting franchise is what it takes for improvement, then so be it. We speak, of course, of Final Fight: Streetwise, which hits retail today with a lofty aim to “turn the fighting genre upside down.”
So what form of a jacked, fist-dealing protagonist will you be taking the role of, you ask? Meet Kyle Travers, brother of the better-known Cody, who packs just as much punch as his hulky kinsman. Kyle has become a regular in the world of underground pit fighting, but the tables turn when a mysterrrrious crime organization shrugs off the duo’s established street rep and kidnaps Cody. As any well-to-do sibling would act, Kyle heads into the lion’s den to encounter the seedy boss behind it all, only to find out *gasp* that a new drug has been circulating the streets of Metro City, leaving several districts in turmoil. …Sounds like a fine time to kick some ass?
Good thing “ass kickin’” is Kyle’s middle name (that’s makes two of us!), as he’ll be cracking many a skull in a free-roaming Metro City with a host of melee moves, in-your-face supercombo and a tasty selection of close-range weapons and, er, firearms? Leveling up well lie in three key elements (which, believe it or not, is a way of living for tough guys like these): respect (good for those interpersonal skillz), tension (fighting ability) and money (buys everything). As is always a Capcom specialty, the game is loaded with tasty unlockables including the original Final Fight and a hefty soundtrack.
Speaking of tunes, digital record company INgrooves was proud to announced today that it has licensed 28 of its hip-hop and electronic songs to Capcom for use in Streetwise. The soundtrack also “streets” today, though available only through iTunes, Rhapsody and other online music stores.
See? Now you maul through hoards of goons while rocking the headphones! We had a bit of hands-on time with Final Fight: Streetwise during E3, so best read up on it if you know what's good for you. *cracks knuckles intimidatingly*
